Arabic Lessons for Arabs

I received these cartoons to my email and laughed so hard at them as they seemed so true. They happen everyday in our society.

I remember an incident where a friend of mine and I were sitting on the same table at a wedding. She has a 1 and a half year old boy and she wanted him to sit down and she kept on saying SIT SIT. I laughed at her and said .. he is your kid he isn’t a dog!!! She addressed him in English and I swear it sounded like she was talking to a dog or something. Later on, she only addressed the poor little kid in English so I just had to comment again, asking her as to why they talk to him in English, and she said well am German and his dad is Italian ( as a joke.. she is Arab and her husband too). We laughed and I just got it out of my system for a while. She explained later that she wanted the kid to grow up with fluent English. GUESS WHAT?? He will end up not speaking his own mother tongue language!!

It is lovely to have bilingual kids and even trilingual. The only excuse for an Arab to not speak Arabic is that they would have been born and brought up abroad in an English or French or whatever other language it is country.

I have always thought that English was easier to use as many people around me don’t speak Arabic, but once at home it is ARABIC that I want to hear. After a long day of English I miss hearing Arabic. I remember a movie for Ahmad Zaki ( Al Namir Al Aswad) that I was watching a couple of days ago on TV. He was in Germany for a while and the minute he heard ARABIC he was jumping around of happiness. I loved the way this actor expressed it.

It is such a shame that we find many Arabs who don’t speak Arabic AT ALL. The language is getting weaker everyday as we don’t want to speak it anymore.

The trend is say Hi in English, put some words in Arabic and then go back to English. Distorted sentences!!! People either think it is cooler to talk that way or it just says that they well educated!

Knowing other languages is a must nowadays, but of course we shouldn’t just let go of our own language as it is a beautiful one.

I go back to criticize myself now. Well I can speak Arabic very well but sometimes I just feel that I can express myself better in English which is something I SHOULD START working on. I will definitely start reading more Arabic books and Arabic poetry. I would definitely teach my kids Arabic first if ever have any ;) oh and I sure need Arabic typing lessons!!

Peace,

First of all, I loved the red :D It is SOOOOO you :)

Now, I will share a story with you...

I went to Lebanon for work, and I met a company's delegate from Austria, and we were talking about cultures and stuff, and suddenly he asked me "Why you guys here write the menus in English, why not in your own language? What if your grandma came and wanted something from here and she has no clue what english is? It is a shame to ask someone to translate for her IN HER OWN COUNTRY!"...
He is so right, you know?!...I couldn't reply back ...

Ciao ;-)

Good post Ramroom with very funny cartoons :)

1. You shouldnt use your language these days , 3aib ya ramroom, you should talk in english or you will not be classy!!!

2. I love Ahmad Zaki, he was the greatest in the Arabic Cinema and I remember that moment in the movie very well when he was jumping, he did it in an amazing way and that gave me the feeling that i cant live in a forign country where i walk in the streets and dont hear any Arabic word, its really so hard.

3. I love Arabic language, I really love it , its soooo beautiful, you can find an Arabic word for every tiny thing in the world.

4. If you want to work on your Arabic language just read my blog and it will be perfect ;-)

back in my own country, we have the same situation, where kids would learn english first, and only when he is a toddler and starts to play with other kids from the neighborhood, that is only the time he speaks and learns our own language. i don't see any problem at all if you try to teach your kids early, but please try to do it with sophistication. maybe the mother should read books to her kid, reading materials for kids, or simply try to do it at home, not everywhere, coz it looks stupid and silly. and being profound in english is gained through education. i think instilling to a child's mind the value of education and wisdom must come first, and the child then will know what to prioritize in life.

7ala, am glad you liked them :) I LOVE AHMAD ZAKI too... allah yer7amo ..

and yes the Arabic language is one of the most beautiful ones.

Ada: I totally agree. English comes along as a person grows up. Readinf to kids is a perfect way to do that.. I remember reading so many stories while young. I htink it made my language better. you know? I remember an Englosh teacher who made us have our own dictionaries so everytime we learned a new word we would write it down in our dictionary... we learned so many words that way and it was really cool :)

Good post..i know what you mean about blogging in english versus arabic. i find it easier for me to express my self in english and also typing is much faster for me in english than arabic. as for our children, it all starts at home. speak arabic at home all the time because english will be learned in schools and it is well spoken outside the house too. good luck everyone!

That was an interesting post. I agree with you, you own language should come first. I learnt English before my own mother-tongue - 11 years before and now find it near pointless trying to communicate in it. What a shame.

Yeah htis is so bugging! and so wrong... if you want your child to be bilingual, you talk to him entirley in Arabic and let someone talk to him entirely in English. But don't talk to him one word in Arabic and another in English... This is just confusing!!
